The Royal Ritual is the dark/industrial project by U.K. born David Lawrie.

The Royal Ritual – the dark/alternative project fronted by UK-born composer and producer David Lawrie – are set to follow up their 2022 debut album MARTYRS with the release of Pleasure Hides Your Needs this May. Modes of Violence is the first single to drop from the long player.

Debut AnalogueTrash release Modes of Violence is the perfect introduction to the sound of The Royal Ritual; a track which David succinctly describes as “a love song to sing to the narcissist(s) in your life.”

The track represents a natural bridge between the sound of his 2022 debut into the project’s new material: “Modes Of Violence seemed to me to be the one song on Pleasure Hides Your Needs that still has quite a few elements of the MARTYRS sound to it. I felt it was probably a good stepping stone for listeners who have been following along. It is aggressive, but with one eyebrow raised.”

The dark and driving feel of the arrangement and the lyrics’ blend of reflection, observation, and social commentary will appeal to fans of IAMX, Gary Numan, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy, New Model Army, and HEALTH.

Producer and frontman David trained as a classical pianist from the age of 7, but The Royal Ritual was born just before the Covid-19 Pandemic. Initially the project was a studio-based affair, with the debut album MARTYRS being produced in complete isolation in Lawrie’s private studio in Northern California.

Blending harsh synthetic tones; dark, percussive sound design; and traditional world instruments, a new industrial landscape was forged in The Royal Ritual, with the debut release being well received by the press and goth and industrial music communities and a solid fanbase beginning to form for this exciting new act.

David has since relocated to the UK to concentrate on making his own music as well as working with artists like CocoRosie, Phildel, and IAMX as a producer and remixer. His remix of the title track of IAMX’s 2023 album Fault Lines even featured on the EP of the same name, released ahead of the album. David’s compositional work also includes the award-winning sound design for the acclaimed film Of Shark and Man.
