"It's called a Zune. It's what everybody's listening to on Earth nowadays. It's got three hundred songs on it."
―Kraglin Obfonteri to Star-Lord
Star-Lord's Zune is a digital media player previously owned by Peter Quill until he gifted it to his best friend, Rocket.

A Zune player from Earth with three hundred songs on it ended up in space, where it was sold at a junker shop. Following Peter Quill's departure from the Yondu Ravager Clan and his decision to form the Guardians of the Galaxy, Yondu Udonta purchased the Zune from the shop believing that Quill would one day rejoin his crew. Udonta went through the Zune's library and deleted songs he didn't like in order to make a better playlist for Quill, with the first of the songs he removed being "We Built This City". Udonta then left the Zune in the care of his first mate, Kraglin Obfonteri, who would occasionally used the Zune himself.

Following Yondu Udonta's death and funeral, Kraglin Obfonteri passed on the Zune to Peter Quill, telling him that Udonta found it for him. Obfonteri then instructed Quill how to use the Zune and gave some suggestions of songs he liked. Quill then activated it and listened to "Father and Son" with Groot as he mourned Udonta's death.

The Zune was later plugged into the Benatar and used by the Guardians to listen to music as they traveled throughout space. While responding to an Asgardian distress call, the Guardians listened to "The Rubberband Man" on the Zune. After Gamora was kidnapped by Thanos, Quill used the Zune on the Benatar to distract himself with "New York Groove" until Drax the Destroyer, who was annoyed, turned it off.

Used by the Avengers
In the aftermath of the Battle of Titan and the Snap, which claimed Peter Quill's life, Tony Stark and Nebula attempted to fly the Benatar from Titan to Earth, although they ended up trapped in deep space when the ship broke down. While confined on the Benatar for three weeks, Stark used the Zune to play music in the background while he passed the time playing games with Nebula, including "Dear Mr. Fantasy". Rocket took possession of the Zune over the next five years, listening to "Supersonic Rocket Ship" on the Benatar as he and Hulk flew to Norway to pick up Thor. Following his Blip, the Zune was given back to Quill.

Although the Zune had been returned to the primary ownership of Peter Quill, Rocket would frequently listen to it, having developed a love for Earth's music. Rocket had a device set up in his room on Knowhere, allowing him to plug the Zune into it and blast the music through Knowhere's speakers, as well as adding an input device on their new ship, the Bowie. One day, while Quill was drinking in the bar, Rocket took the Zune and played "Creep", which he sang along to while Mantis danced to it. When a drunk Quill discovered Rocket with his Zune, he snatched it back from him, but then passed out. Rocket took back the Zune and later that night listened to "Crazy On You" right before Adam Warlock attacked.

When Rocket was critically injured, the Guardians set off to save him, and played "Since You Been Gone" in the Bowie as they departed from Knowhere. During the infiltration mission into the Orgoscope, Quill had the Zune, which was still on the Bowie, stream its music to the Guardian's spacesuits, and they listened to "In the Meantime" as they descended in space. Quill turned the music off to privately talk with Gamora. Groot waited in the Bowie, and when the Guardians contacted him to rescue them, he flew into the Orgoscope, playing "Reasons" as he crashed into the facility.

As the Guardians headed to Counter-Earth, Quill looked out into space and listened to "Do You Realize??" until Drax interrupted him to talk. Once they arrived at Counter-Earth, "We Care a Lot" played throught the speakers of the Bowie. While the Guardians exited the ship, Gamora stayed behind and checked on Rocket, who had the Zune next to him playing "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows." Gamora examined the Zune and then walked around the ship. Counter-Earth fell under attack, so Gamora piloted the Bowie to get out of danger as it played "San Francisco".

While chasing after High Evolutionary in the Bowie, Quill played "This Is the Day", which Rocket sang along to as the approached the spacecraft. Upon getting inside High Evolutionary's spacecraft, Quill brought the Zune with him and listened to "No Sleep till Brooklyn" as he was reunited with the rest of the Guardians. Quill continued listening to the Zune as the Guardians fought against High Evolutionary's forces. After defeating High Evolutionary, the Guardians made their way to Knowhere as the spacecraft exploded, but Quill dropped the Zune, so he went back to grab it, which almost cost him his life.

In the aftermath of defeating High Evolutionary, the majority of the Guardians of the Galaxy decided to leave the team to go on individual paths, with Rocket being appointed as the leader of the team's future roster. Star-Lord gifted the Zune to Rocket, stating that the reason he went back for it was because of Rocket, knowing that he too appreciated music. As the citizens of Knowhere recovered after the battle, Rocket played "Dog Days Are Over" through the speakers. Groot was the first to start dancing, then followed by Rocket, and soon everyone was dancing together, including Drax.

Much like Quill did for his Guardians lineup, Rocket shared the music from the Zune with the new roster, which they would get very familiar with and they would have discussions about it.[8] Sometime later, on a mission on Krylor, the Guardians talked about their favourite artists, and on Rocket's turn, he played "Come and Get Your Love", claiming it was a special song. They then jumped into battle while listening to the Zune.
