Techno Mage

Techno Mage is an electronic project formed by Dan Butler in 2018. The music is informed by an overarching, conceptual narrative which reflects on the human condition as it relates to technology, identity, self-worth, and the ongoing pursuit of purpose. Techno Mage can be characterized as a mixture of synthwave, chiptune, vgm, digital fusion, extreme metal, and orchestral/score.

Behind the characteristic sound of Techno Mage is Dan Butler, who functions as the project's songwriter, producer, and keyboardist. He is creatively inclined toward expressive, dynamic music that is informed by the human experience. Butler credits Alex Brandon and Robert A. Allen as early influences during his formative years. Along with acts such as Makeup and Vanity Set, Gary Numan, and Mick Gordon, those early impressions shape Butler's sensibilities as a songwriter. As the former host of Chiptune Night, Butler is known to the synth and chip communities as "Dark Roast Dan." He operates out of the greater Seattle area.

This all-chiptune album is a ground-up reimagining of Hexproof (2023), painstakingly arranged for the NES. From drum hits to riffs, I've taken great care to recontextualize all 11 songs while staying true to the spirit of the source material. On this physical cartridge is a straightforward music player which can be run on original NES hardware.*
