Kazuyuki Asakawa, a curious former journalist, unexpectedly comes across four deaths from heart failure occurring simultaneously in Tokyo. Without permission from his boss, and with the help of a professor of paranormal studies, he decides to investigate the mystery. His search will lead him to a disturbing cursed video that warns: whoever sees it will die within seven days. Filmed and released for Japanese television under the title “Ring: Accident or Unnatural Death? A Young Girl’s Hatred Who Steals Four Lives,” this film was the first feature-length adaptation of Koji Suzuki’s bestselling novel “Ring,” which would become a worldwide phenomenon in 1998 with Hideo Nakata’s film adaptation. Three months after being broadcast on August 11, 1995 by FujiTV, it was released on VHS and Laserdisc under the title “Ring: Kanzenban,” which included several distinct scenes and raised the sexual tone of the film. However, the present edition is identical to the one broadcast by FujiTV that night in 1995, and is possibly the most faithful version of Suzuki's original novel that exists to this day.
