Waymo…The Real Driverless Car Has Arrived

Sense, Solve, and Go: The Magic of the Waymo Driver
Why do driverless cars have steering wheels?https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2025/01/07/waymo-driverless-car-review-bidenomics-legacy/A friend not to be named recently texted me a dark secret from inside a driverless taxi: He was having a great time in there.
My pal had been riding around via robotaxi for an entire work trip and, “low-key,” he confessed via an invisible-ink text, he was “ready for the robots to take over.”
That friend is not Rick Reilly, but it could be. Our columnist recently gave a Waymo taxi several spins in Santa Monica, California, and rated each trip a five-star success — even the one during which his AI chauffeur scooted confusedly around a parking lot for a while.
It’s still all a little unnerving, Rick says: “Waymo kind of drives like your 89-year-old grandpa.” Waymo doesn’t defrost, because Waymo doesn’t need to defrost; Waymo can see just fine. All this will take quite a lot of adjusting to.
The whole review is fun, but the best bit is the Zen koan Rick mulled riding around L.A.:
“Why do driverless cars have steering wheels?”
Chaser: Megan McArdle reviewed her Waymo debut in 2022 and was less titillated. In fact, she found the future “almost disappointingly normal.”
