Back when I was a young 'un, "cryptid" referenced "cryptozoological." Zoological, as in potential actual flesh and blood animal. Such as an ape, bear, fish, lizard, etc. that may or may not exist, based on sightings, tracks, etc. Beings that would be considered spirits, whether from spiritual beliefs or reported behavior such as vanishing into thin air, are a separate matter altogether.
While I suppose the two can intersect in some regards, it seems like I've seen an overabundance of spirit beings being referenced as cryptids lately. Especially a certain cannibal spirit.
Am I just being old and nitpicky? Has the definition expanded?
