That ripped Home Depot werewolf has become the new Halloween flex

Move over, Tall Bones, and make room for an animatronic, subliminally sexy, 9-foot-tall howler who has marked his territory on America’s front lawns.

Angela Rush already has the 12-foot Home Depot skeleton, and a whole bunch of regular-size ones, too. She has a nearly full-size hearse carriage drawn by skeleton horses, a massive tarantula, a 12-foot pumpkin-headed “inferno” skeleton, a dragon and numerous light up pumpkins. She has so many Halloween decorations that she has to rent a storage unit, and each year she must hire a moving truck to bring them all to her home. She didn’t need anything else.

“My Halloween decorating has gotten so kind of out of hand that I’m like, I’m not doing it anymore,” says Rush, 51, who lives in Augusta, Ga. She resolved not to be tempted by any other plastic ghouls or goblins. Even if they were on sale.

That was until she found out about the Home Depot’s new 9½-foot animatronic werewolf. “I was like, ‘Hold on. Halloween’s back on.’”

She saw him and she had to buy him: A beefy, sinewy wolfman with massive hands (paws?), glowing eyes and, under his shredded buffalo-check shirt, six-pack abs. Best of all, and unlike his skeletal brethren, he talks and moves: With a growl, he opens his mouth to reveal a row of sharp fangs, tilts his head back and … aroooooooooo!

Rush bought the $399 werewolf on “Orange Friday,” which is what the most dedicated of Halloween decorators call the day Home Depot makes its Halloween decorations available online for purchase. This year, that day was July 15, when normal people are, well, what’s normal anymore?

“I was so excited when I got him that I set him up in my house,” says Rush, which was almost a problem when the werewolf couldn’t fit through the door, and had to be disassembled again. But she loves him. Her teenage son loves him. Everybody loves him, except her two huskies, who regard him with suspicion.

“They just stare at it,” says Rush. “And it’s funny, ’cause they howl like he does.”

Two years ago, Home Depot made a skeleton taller than God and changed Halloween forever. How do you follow that up? Not with a talking skeleton (too predictable) or a taller skeleton (may topple in high winds), but by expanding into an entire multiverse of giant spooky creatures: There is now a witch who appears to fly on a 12-foot broomstick, and a 15-foot phantom. But it’s the werewolf who seems to have become the breakout hit.

“People are used to the skeletons now. They’ve seen all of that. And this is something different,” says Jill Houser, 48, who has an elaborate werewolf campsite complete with a tent and body parts set up in her Pittsburgh front yard.

Jennifer Corcoran, 44, of Nashville, is the moderator of several Facebook groups dedicated to large-scale holiday decorating, including a 50,000-member, 12-foot skeleton group. Rumors began bubbling up that the werewolf would be part of the store’s Halloween lineup, but it was a tightly guarded secret.

Until some photos from a Home Depot conference leaked last spring. Right as Corcoran was at the hospital being prepped to go under anesthesia for back surgery.

“I sent it over to Lance” — that would be Lance Allen, the director at Home Depot responsible for the brand’s pantheon of giants, with who she is now on a first-name basis — “and was like, is this legit?” says Corcoran. It was, he confirmed. A nurse came to take her phone and wheel her into surgery.

“I remember the nurse’s face,” says Corcoran. “I was like, ‘No there’s a werewolf coming! I have to post this.’ ”

“We all were like rabid fiends trying to get it,” says Holly Agouridis, 50, of her fellow Facebook group haunters. “I do kind of a cornfield-type scene on one of my [yard] sections, and I was like, ‘He’s definitely going to go there.’ ” The kids in her Silver Spring neighborhood have named him “Howie the Howler.”

Gregory McAdams, 48, is a big werewolf guy — “I actually just had a werewolf tattoo put on my arm Wednesday” — who counts “The Wolfman” among his favorite movies. So the prospect of a werewolf joining his 12-foot skeleton was pretty thrilling. He posed his in front of his Nashua, N.H., home holding two halves of a (normal-size) skeleton — the head in torso in one paw, the pelvis and legs in another — as if to denote the new hierarchy of Halloween. The werewolf had surpassed what was formerly his favorite decoration. “He’s my number one now,” says McAdams.

Over in Waltham, Mass., Billy Gridley, 47, ordered one online, and then ordered a backup wolf to be shipped to the store, just in case something went wrong.

“It was such a big deal that I was kind of nervous that I wasn’t going to be able to get ahold of one,” he says. But the first one arrived safe and sound, so he canceled his second order.

“We got it all set up and everything worked great, except it had two left hands, he says. “I was like, you have to be kidding me.”

So he made a trek to another Home Depot to pick up what would be his third wolf order, “And lo and behold, that one had two right hands,” says Gridley, now the owner of a complete werewolf (he swapped the hands and returned one).

Other werewolf mishaps did not end quite as harmoniously. Unfortunately for Jim Nelson and his 6-year-old-daughter Evelyn, the werewolf (named “Mr. Howly”) arrived broken, with his jaw detached from his head. Not to worry: “I made a muzzle for him,” says Nelson, 41, of Erie, Pa. “I cut up an old leather belt and then just kind of glued it on his head.”

And not everyone has been so keen. Melissa Hayden, 52, of Pittsboro, N.C., has a neighbor who complained to her homeowners association about her werewolf, whom she loves.

“They said it was too scary” for their grandchildren,” says Nelson, who was flummoxed. She’s one of those people who keep their 12-foot skeleton up all year round, dressing him up in costumes for every holiday, “in my yard 24/7, 365 days a year.” The neighbors had never complained about that.

Werewolves occupy a particular place in the horror genre, says Bryan Fuller, writer and executive producer of numerous television shows, including “Hannibal” and “Pushing Daisies,” and also a proud Home Depot werewolf owner. They’re a metaphor for there being “something inside of me that I can’t control, i.e. my sexuality. If I let it out, bad things will happen,” says Fuller, whose werewolf was a birthday gift from his partner.

Werewolves “can hide who they are, until they can’t. And so the idea of having this giant werewolf in the middle of a queer person’s yard means a little bit more than just a fuzzy monster from a horror movie,” says Fuller, who is also the producer of the documentary series “Queer for Fear: The History of Queer Horror.” “It has all of this kind of sociopolitical resonance that is important to me.”

Part of the reason the werewolf is a hit also may be that it’s an underrated monster. There aren’t that many werewolf movies — “The Wolfman,” “An American Werewolf in Paris” and “Werewolf of London” — and werewolves are often relegated to supporting characters, as in the “Twilight” movies. Or, they’re written for laughs, like the werewolves of “What We Do in the Shadows” (“We’re werewolves, not swearwolves!”), especially when the werewolf’s transformation is a metaphor for puberty: Think “Teen Wolf,” or “Werewolf Bar Mitzvah,” one of the greatest bits in “30 Rock.”

“The horror of losing control of your body and having it be taken over by your bestial self is something so terrifying,” says Fuller, “It comes full circle around to humor.”

But, well, while we’re on the topic of sexuality: The werewolves seem to have attracted an audience beyond Halloween decorators. You know who else loves the werewolf? Furries. For the uninitiated, furries are a subculture of people who are interested in anthropomorphic animal characters, conceptually and, for some, romantically.

When she saw the 9½-foot werewolf, “I was like, wow, this is really hot,” says a 29-year-old who asked to go by the name of her vTube persona, which is Buffpup, a buxom werewolf. The Home Depot wolf has “a nice butt,” she says, and strong, muscular arms. She jokingly calls him her boyfriend, though she does have a real, human boyfriend. Even though Buffpup knows Home Depot would never admit it, she suspects the werewolf may have been designed with furries in mind.

“I think people realize how much money they can make off of furries because they’re a big-spending type of group,” she says.

And it’s not just the furries! Corcoran, the leader of the Halloween Facebook groups, found herself moderating a discussion about the werewolf’s, ahem, physique, under those shredded pants. Turns out, a lot of people wanted to know what he looked like naked. “We talkin’ Ken doll?” asked one group member. “Would it be inappropriate for me to ask if you can send me some nudes of the werewolf?” another asked Corcoran. (For the record: Ken Doll. With plastic bas-relief hair.)

This summer, Troy Sager found himself “really drooling over that werewolf,” but listen, not in that way. Sager, 54, of Arthur, N.D., wanted to add to his collection of spooky decor, which he enhances with a few DIY elements. Sager took a mannequin half-torso, dressed it with pants, used spray foam to simulate entrails, and covered the whole thing in splattered blood, splaying it out at the wolf’s feet.

“It looks like the werewolf kind of had a little meal,” he says. A day-care center down the street allegedly brought the kids by to check out his display, which also includes a 12-foot skeleton and an Inferno, and he didn’t hear any screaming. “I’m sure a lot of them enjoyed it,” he says.
Houser employed similar techniques for her elaborate werewolf campsite. Branded “Camp Carnage,” her talking wolf holds a battered body and a fistful of foam guts. He’s joined by another, smaller, stationary werewolf and a zombie mannequin that Houser covered in fur, emerging from a tent: “He’s transitioning. He’s still a person but turning into a werewolf,” she says.

Meanwhile, in Rantoul, Ill., Nikia Hults, who had gone to every Home Depot within a 2½-hour radius of her home and crossed state lines to get her wolf (“We just call him Wolfie”), enlisted her mother-in-law to sew him a new outfit. She picked out some neon green fabric — “I thought green would kind of set him off and kind of make everything cohesive” — and Wolfie got a brand-new size XXXL shirt.

Other werewolf parents have done creative displays with Three Little Pigs or Little Red Riding Hood themes. Next year, Corcoran thinks even more people will branch out into elaborate werewolf displays: Expect “Thriller” werewolves, Teen Wolves, and, from “30 Rock” fans who want to play to a niche audience, wolves wearing yarmulkes.

Over at Fuller’s house in the Silver Lake neighborhood of Los Angeles, the werewolf is situated in a graveyard scene beyond his driveway. He struggled putting his wolf together. For a while, it was just a pair of disembodied legs, which was both spooky and funny in its own way.

But once he was assembled, Fuller has enjoyed returning home from late nights at work to be greeted by the blinking eyes of Kevin. That’s his werewolf’s name. Most of the time, he’s just a regular dude, says Fuller, except when the moon is full. “There’s something funny about calling a werewolf Kevin.”

How the world’s last wild red wolves are avoiding extinction

The endangered wolves face multiple threats, from cars to climate change. A renewed push to save them in eastern North Carolina has brought cautious optimism.

ALLIGATOR RIVER NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, N.C. — In April, the latest glimmer of hope appeared here in the only spot on Earth where endangered red wolves remain in the wild.

Five pups were born to a pair of wolves — a female known as 2413, and a male known as 2444 — marking the third year in a row that at least one new litter began life in this corner of coastal North Carolina.

The births sparked joy among red wolf advocates and the small team of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service employees who oversee the decades-long effort to restore a native animal that once roamed widely throughout the Southeast, but saw its numbers in the wild plummet to single digits by 2020.

The elation didn’t last.

On June 5, the father of the litter, 2444, was struck and killed by a vehicle on Highway 64 — one of four red wolves to meet such a fate over the past year alone. The mother soon abandoned the litter of pups, leaving heartbreak and frustration in their place.

“It’s a serious roller coaster,” Joe Madison, the red wolf recovery program manager in North Carolina for the Fish and Wildlife Service, recalled just after dawn on a recent morning, as he drove near the site of the recent vehicle strike. “It takes a toll, I’m not gonna lie.”

A roller coaster might be the best way to describe a recovery effort that has been underway since the 1970s, when officials rescued the last genetically pure red wolves from a population that had been decimated by government-sanctioned hunting. The species Canis rufus was declared extinct in the wild in 1980, though captive breeding has continued.

Since 1987, the push to save red wolves from extinction has been based around an experimental population on the Albemarle Peninsula, with its vast swamp forests, marshes and open farmland.

The effort has endured a dizzying series of ups and downs over that time. It is a complex story of shifting priorities within the federal government, of conflict with nearby landowners, of animals stricken down by gunshots and cars, of scientific disputes and legal challenges, of miscommunication and simmering resentments, of ongoing distrust but also of determination and dedication.

“There are always peaks and valleys,” said Kim Wheeler, who for almost two decades has run the Red Wolf Coalition, an outreach and educational nonprofit in Columbia, N.C.

The last few years have seen the program slowly emerge from one of its darkest valleys, when the red wolf population that once grew to 120 here shrank to only seven, and the future of the species and the government effort to save it seemed precarious at best.

During the Biden administration, the federal government has recommitted to helping red wolves thrive in this landscape — and eventually, elsewhere across the Southeast.

Officials have begun once again to strategically release some of the nearly 300 captive-bred wolves into the wild. Multiple litters of pups have been born in the five-county area that surrounds the Alligator River refuge. And the government has launched a concerted effort to mend fractured local relationships that have bred acrimony, fostered misinformation and imperiled the prospects of long-term success.

The hope is that this time we are going to get it right,” said Ron Sutherland, chief scientist for the Wildlands Network, who has worked for more than a decade on red wolf issues. “I’m optimistic that all the pieces are there.”

Still, with fewer than 20 known red wolves on the landscape and their presence a delicate issue, their future here remains inherently uncertain. No one understands that better than Madison.

“We’ve still got a long way to go,” he said as he peered from the window of his government-issued Chevy truck one morning. “I don’t think anybody thinks it’s going to be easy or short.”

And yet, he insists the work of restoring endangered red wolves remains very much worth it..

“They are a missing piece of the ecosystem out here,” he said. “And without that, things are out of whack.”

Francine Madden, an outside mediator hired by the federal government, spent much of the past year and a half talking with more than 150 people impacted by the red wolf recovery efforts.

A 37-page “conflict assessment” she published in June summarizes hours spent with farmers and hunters, business owners and community leaders, federal and state officials, red wolf advocacy groups and many others.

“In these conversations, I sensed great concern about the depth and history of the conflict. I heard despair, anger, frustration, exhaustion and bitterness,” she wrote. “But I also heard feelings of positive resolve, and even occasional hints of cautious optimism about what it could mean to really hear one another.”

To understand those long-held tensions and the hope for a less volatile future, it’s helpful to look at the not-too-distant past.

Barely a decade ago, the red wolf recovery program in North Carolina seemed largely on solid footing a quarter century after it had begun.

In 2012, the number of wolves in the wild reached a peak of about 120, according to federal officials.

But those growing numbers also coincided with growing conflict in the area. Much of the anger was tied up in a broader set of frustrations over land management, and a sentiment among some that the federal government was imposing its will with little regard for or input from locals.

Some landowners and hunters bristled at coyote hunting restrictions and complained of the wolves’ presence on their lands as they ventured from the nearby federal refuges. Some landowners argued that red wolves were a detriment to deer populations — a charge that advocates and biologists have maintained is unfounded.

Amid the discord, the number of wolves went into a steep decline.

Numerous red wolves — the average adult weighs as much as 80 pounds and stands about 26 inches tall, with characteristic penny-colored fur — were found illegally shot to death, with some hunters claiming they mistook the wolves for coyotes. Others were mowed down by passing cars.

By 2015, the federal government was facing charges of poor coordination with local authorities and mounting anger from vocal landowners. State wildlife officials called on the Fish and Wildlife Service to end its recovery program and once again declare the red wolf extinct in the wild.

That same year, the federal government said it would not release any more endangered wolves in eastern North Carolina while it studied the feasibility of the program.

Conservation groups sued, claiming the Fish and Wildlife Service had neglected its obligations under the Endangered Species Act. In 2018, a federal judge agreed, writing in a scathing opinion that an agency sworn to protect the endangered species had failed to do so, in part by planning to give landowners more leeway to kill red wolves that came onto their property.

Meanwhile, the number of red wolves kept dwindling. No new pups were born in the wild in 2019, 2020 or 2021. The number of wolves being tracked with radio collars shrank to seven, with no mating pairs.

“We came remarkably close to extinction,” Sutherland said.

Since then, the tide has begun to turn once again.

Amid a legal challenge from conservation groups, the federal government in 2021 began to release captive-bred wolves into the wild once more.

In 2022, a litter of six critically endangered red wolves were born in a den at the Alligator River refuge — the first in four years.

Last August, as part of a settlement with advocacy groups, the Fish and Wildlife Service again recommitted to annual red wolf release plans and vowed to manage the eastern North Carolina population “in a manner consistent with the [Endangered Species Act].”

Months later, the agency released a long-awaited recovery plan, which calls for the government to eventually establish “at least three viable populations” of red wolves across their historic range, each of them self-sustaining and genetically diverse.

That goal, the agency acknowledged, could take 50 years and ultimately cost several hundred million dollars.

But it will never succeed, the government wrote, unless the Fish and Wildlife Service works in tandem with local residents, scientists, advocacy groups and other government agencies.

“Recovery of threatened and endangered species cannot be done by a single agency or organization,” the plan states. “The Service must work with others to be successful.”

Plenty of frustration and wariness remain, Madden said in an email, but some individuals, from local landowners to federal officials to conservation activists, “seem willing to roll up their sleeves and give it one more try.”

“We’re still in the early stages,” she wrote, “but already I see glimmers of optimism on all sides.”

While Madden and others work to repair frayed relationships, another critical task looms: preventing more red wolves from dying at the hands of humans.

In recent years, vehicle strikes along Highway 64 and other roads have become the largest cause of mortality, with each death dealing a significant blow to the recovery program. Nearly a quarter of known adult red wolves in the wild died on area roads last year.

“It’s maddening,” says Madison, whose agency has placed electronic message boards along the highway warning drivers of the presence of endangered red wolves.

One development that could help is the construction of wildlife crossings, which could aid not only red wolves but also bear, deer, turtles, snakes and other animals that have perished along this stretch.

The 2021 infrastructure bill passed by Congress includes $350 million in grants for wildlife crossings, and state and federal officials plan to apply soon for a project that would provide crossings along Highway 64, which slices through the Alligator River refuge.

“Right now, road mortality is the main thing holding the population back,” Sutherland said on a sweltering afternoon as he checked trail cameras his group maintains in the area. “If we don’t start now, they will never get built.”

An anonymous donor offered to give $2 million to help build crossings if conservation groups could raise an extra $2 million in matching funds this summer. The idea is that $4 million could be leveraged to obtain an additional $16 million in federal funding.

“It’s a great opportunity,” Sutherland said. And yet, not a slam dunk. “It turns out that it’s not that easy to go out and find $2 million, especially in an election year.”

Meanwhile, the Fish and Wildlife Service has taken other measures to try to mitigate risks. It now puts orange reflective tape on the radio collars that it places on red wolves, in an effort to reduce confusion with coyotes. And the service is working with state officials to more quickly clean up other road kill that can attract red wolves.

Madison said the agency also is trying to more frequently let landowners know when red wolves venture their direction.

“We’re more transparent than in the past,” he said. “We want to tell people when they are on their land.”

One other threat for which there is no simple answer: sea level rise and climate change. As rising waters intrude on the refuge, scientists say, the area available to red wolves could shrink over time.

“Future habitat loss from sea level rise and increased flooding is expected to impact” red wolves, the government wrote in its recent recovery plan, “and could affect the population’s ability to reach viability.”

For now, on any given day in eastern North Carolina, it’s possible to encounter a mixture of skepticism and steadfastness, of wariness and resolve when it comes to red wolves.

Blake Gard, who grew up in the area and is president of the board of directors for the Manns Harbor Fire Department, said many residents are largely indifferent, and that the hard feelings that exist are often less about the animals and more about a general distrust of the federal government.

“There hasn’t been a lot of involvement or outreach,” said Gard, who has advocated for locals to have more say in how the program operates and is promoted going forward. “The lack of communication has led to people filling in the blanks themselves.”

Stephen Fletcher, who owns 170 acres of land in nearby Beaufort County, is among those who still bristle at restrictions on coyote hunting that were imposed in the five counties around the refuge to try to reduce shooting of red wolves — restrictions that don’t exist elsewhere in the state.

“It affects my wildlife management plans on my own property,” Fletcher said. “We’re going on close to 40 years of this … At what point do we say it’s a lost cause in this area?”

Despite the lingering frustrations, fervent support remains for the effort to reestablish red wolves in the wild, researchers and advocates say.

“We have to find some middle ground … We cannot give up on this animal,” Wheeler said one day inside the small office of her coalition, where wolf prints hang on the walls and wolf books line her shelves. “The red wolf has a place on the landscape.”

At dusk on nearly any evening, the gravel roads along the Alligator River refuge are dotted with visitors scanning the landscape for a glimpse of one of the planet’s most endangered creatures, along with the black bears, quail, snakes and other creatures with which it shares these fields and forests.

And not long after dawn on many mornings, Madison is out checking on the whereabouts of the red wolves that remain, even as he and his small team work to help their numbers grow.

“We’re definitely on an upswing,” he said on a recent day as he drove through the refuge. But, he added, “Until we get to the point where it’s self-sustaining, it’s always fragile.”

The early light glinted through his red and white beard. In his truck, he carried an antenna and a handheld receiver. The collars of each red wolf in the wild have a different frequency, and he flipped through them until he arrived at the signal for 2191 — a male that Madison hopes might father another litter of pups in the coming year.

The red wolf was nearby, though nowhere in sight. But the steady beep of his collar let Madison know that, for now, he was alive and well.

A middle-schooler’s unconventional ‘I Voted’ sticker won Michigan’s inaugural contest.

Jane Hynous was bored watching “National Treasure” in her social studies class, so she pulled out a few markers and drew the first quirky image that entered her mind: a werewolf.

That June morning, the 12-year-old had learned that her state of Michigan was holding a competition for the best custom election stickers. Jane drew the werewolf ripping off its blue shirt while howling, with the words “I VOTED” in the background above an American flag.

When the middle school student returned to her home that afternoon in Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich., she took a picture of her drawing and submitted it online, not expecting much to come of it.

But in the past week, Jane’s drawing has gone viral on social media and appeared on national TV programs since the Michigan Department of State announced that it was one of nine winners. The image might serve as a reflection of voters’ anxiety about two months before the election, but Jane said her drawing had little to do with politics.

“I just wanted to do something that was going to be, I guess, funny and not so serious,” Jane, a seventh-grader, told The Washington Post. “Because, you know, voting is such a serious topic, and you want to have something fun that’s going to lighten it up.”

Jane started doodling on her parents’ iPad as a 4-year-old and has since gone on to make beaded bracelets, origami art and dioramas in shoe boxes.

Still, when Jane’s teacher distributed templates and instructions for the sticker contest in June, Jane wasn’t sure whether she would enter. She said she didn’t think anything she created would stand out. But she didn’t want to watch “National Treasure,” so she drew with the markers and pens from her pencil case.

Jane figured other contestants would draw designs related to Michigan — lighthouses, trout and white-tailed deer — but she wanted to create something unique. She said she drew her werewolf in less than an hour.

Michigan residents submitted more than 480 designs between May and June, according to the Michigan Department of State.

Competitions in other states inspired Michigan’s contest, Zena Aljilehawi, the chair of a college student-led task force that helped organize the competition, told The Post. A third-grader in Kentucky this year drew a humanoid lizard, and in New York in 2022, a 14-year-old drew a multicolored, discombobulated human head on top of six turquoise legs.

Aljilehawi, 23, hoped Michigan’s contest would receive similar quirky designs. The competition’s template listed a few rules and tips: The design must say “I Voted,” be nonpartisan, avoid artificial intelligence, and participants should “be creative and HAVE FUN!”

Unbeknownst to Jane, Aljilehawi said she and the 33 other members of her task force had a feeling the sticker would win when they first saw it.

“Our group chat went crazy,” said Aljilehawi, a junior studying biology, health and society at the University of Michigan.

People interpreted the drawing differently. Aljilehawi said some task force members thought the werewolf was based on the Michigan Dogman, a humanoid dog who legend says was seen around North Michigan in the 1880s. Aljilehawi said the sticker emitted “freedom” and “rock-and-roll energy.”

“If you asked an AI to generate the American spirit sticker,” she said, “I don’t think it could have done something better than what we got.”

Angela Benander, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of State, said the design was “delightfully unhinged.”

“It’s kind of a fun spin on just, you know, what feels like a crazy season to a lot of people,” she said.

A few weeks after entering her drawing, Jane learned that the task force, which works with the Michigan Department of State to encourage young people to vote, selected her sticker as a semifinalist. The public could vote for the winners on the department’s website.

Jane said she had just finished swimming in Lake Huron one day in August when her social studies teacher called her mother, Amy, to deliver an update: Jane had won the contest.

“It was really surprising,” Jane said. “I’m standing there in a bathing suit like, ‘What?’”

Jane’s design received 20,000 votes from the public — about 2,000 more than any other sticker, Samantha May, a spokeswoman for the Michigan Department of State, said in an email.

The department announced the winners on Sept. 4. Some of the other winners featured a cat holding an “I VOTED” sign, a deer wearing sunglasses and a lighthouse projecting “I VOTED!” One sticker said, “I Voted yay” — with the “e” backward — and another used Midwest slang: “OPE, I VOTED.”

A few days after the announcement, Jane said her classmates told her that her drawing was on their social media feeds.

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson posted Jane’s drawing on X with the caption: “Walking into general election season like.”

Derek Dobies, the chief of staff for Michigan’s AFL-CIO, wrote on X: “If there is ever a year to have an unhinged werewolf ripping its shirt off as the ‘I Voted’ sticker … it’s 2024.”

John Oliver joked on his show “Last Week Tonight” on Sunday that he would commit voter fraud to obtain multiple copies of the sticker.

Michigan clerks will order and distribute rolls of the winning stickers to voters in November, and Benander said she expects the werewolf designs to run out quickly. Regardless of voters’ interpretation of her drawing, Jane said, she hopes it will bring them joy.

“They’re going to be wearing this on their chest the day they vote,” she said, “and I want them to be proud of it.”
