Mad Max is an Australian post-apocalyptic and dystopian action film series and media franchise created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy. It began in 1979 with Mad Max, and was followed by three sequels: Mad Max 2 (1981, released in the United States as The Road Warrior), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) and Mad Max: Fury Road (2015); Miller directed or co-directed all four films. Mel Gibson portrayed the titular character Max Rockatansky in the first three films, while Tom Hardy portrayed the character in Mad Max: Fury Road.

The series follows Max, initially a police officer in a future Australia which is experiencing societal collapse due to war, critical resource shortages, and ecocide. When his wife and child are murdered by a vicious biker gang, Max kills the gang in revenge and becomes a drifting loner in the Australian Wasteland. As Australia devolves further into barbarity, Max finds himself increasingly more isolated yet still willing to help pockets of civilisation, initially for his own self-interest, though his motives always drift into more altruistic ones.

Is there a Mad Max: The Wasteland?

Mad Max: The Wasteland does not have an official release date, but it will likely be announced in the future.

After Fury Road hit theaters in 2015, director George Miller talked about coming up with two more films in the franchise. One of those was the Furiosa-based prequel that we’re getting in 2024, and the other is Mad Max: The Wasteland, which will continue the story of Max Rockatansky.

The development of both these projects was halted due to the 2017 lawsuit as George Miller’s production company sued Warner Bros. for not paying a $7 million bonus. But a few years after the litigation, things came back on track for the Furiosa prequel that stars Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth, and Yahya Abdul Mateen-II. But information on The Wasteland is still limited. However, we do expect the director to start developing the project after Furiosa hits theaters.

It would be hard to predict a release date until Warner Bros. officially announces Mad Max: The Wasteland. But the project will certainly happen if the Furiosa movie turns out to be a hit at the box office. George Miller did claim to have a story for The Wasteland in the past. But he also stated that it isn’t completely ready. So, if the next Mad Max movie happens, then it will be a few years before we get to see it.

As for the returning cast members, Charlize Theron will not be coming back as according to Miller, Furiosa is “not in the ‘Mad Max’ [sequel] story”. But there’s a question mark on Tom Hardy’s return as well. After all, he didn’t have the most comfortable time on Fury Road, and the character of Max could get recast. But he could also be back as Theron isn’t supposed to be involved with the project.

Mad Max: Fury Road sequels and spinoffs
In 2011, Miller and McCarthy found during the writing process for Mad Max: Fury Road that they had enough story material for two additional scripts. One of these, entitled Mad Max: Furiosa, had already been completed, and Miller hoped to film it after the release of Fury Road. In March 2015, during an interview with Esquire, Hardy revealed that he was attached to star in three more Mad Max films following Fury Road. In May 2015, Miller told Wired: "Should Fury Road be successful, I've got two other stories to tell." Later in May, Miller revealed that plans for the sequel had changed and the fifth film in the franchise will instead be titled Mad Max: The Wasteland. In October 2015, Miller's team had two scripts for sequels which they ended up with during the writing process. Later that month, he clarified that Mad Max: The Wasteland was a working title for the sequel. Miller reaffirmed his intent to continue the franchise after reports to the contrary surfaced following an interview in January 2016. In November 2017, it was reported that a lawsuit filed by Miller's production company against Warner Bros. over a disputed $7 million bonus was likely to delay the production of any sequels. In July 2019, Miller told IndieWire: "There are two stories, both involving Mad Max, and also a Furiosa story. We're still solving, we've got to play out the Warners thing, it seems to be pretty clear that it's going to happen." Production of the sequels and spinoffs were delayed until after the lawsuit was settled. In October 2020, a prequel titled Furiosa entered "advanced development" at Warner Bros., with Miller set to direct. Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast to portray a young Furiosa, while Chris Hemsworth and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will also star. Miller will co-write the screenplay with Nico Lathouris, while Miller and Doug Mitchell will produce through their Kennedy Miller Mitchell banner.
