postpunk altwave gothclub refugees… whatever, darkly.
"Boston Dark Electronic pioneers You Shriek elegantly defy classification creating a unique sound on the threshold of a new genre."

Founded in the early 1990's, the band quickly gained a devoted Boston following, drawing enthusiastic crowds at the local venues. A cover of Bauhaus' "Bela Lugosi's Dead" featured on the now-legendary Oxygen Denial vinyl compilation brought them an international underground club hit in 1992. After a hiatus from live work in the late 90's to write, record, and produce a full length disc (among other projects), You Shriek have re-emerged on the New England live scene as an A-list underground act. You Shriek's current work, "Unreal Cities", takes the listener through a broad range of emotion and musical versatility. By combining poignant melodies with exquisitely orchestrated instruments, You Shriek define a new movement in progressive music.

Dead Pilots
by You Shriek

Just following orders? ‘Dead Pilots,’ came from reading about a thing in flight dynamics referred to as the coffin corner. When you’re high enough, the air is so thin that an aircraft’s stall speed matches its maximum airspeed. If you get there, it’s all over. Could be the better option...
lyrics
here in a place of unspeakable grace
it’s down to me could I pull back and brace
when I am told - down to me
could i choose to betray the human race
dead pilot— do not follow!

siege dreams complete my mission
take care, we’re all so proud
sent home in red dementia
We vitrified the ground

this is a place of unspeakable grace
it’s down to me could I pull back and brace
when I am told - down to me
but i wold not betray the human race
dead pilot— do not follow!

we’d breach the deep unseeming
that aerotoxic cloud
blanked eyes in exaltation
the pressure hull bleeds out
that’s me

Whoa, whoa

Dead pilot do not follow
Dead pilot do not follow
Dead pilot do not follow
Dead pilots do not follow

jet takes me up
and that was something i would never do to you
You’ve got me stuck in the dark machine
and then the flight controls lock
mach stall shockwaves in a dream

Dead Drops & Chalk Marks (Folio i & ii)
by You Shriek

s bandcamp exclusive version combines the mixes from Folio I and ii as individual tracks instead of the continuous mix found on streaming music retailers. Better for DJ sets and playlists.

I’ve been trying to achieve the perfect mindset for incubating some cohesive and encompassing words about this collection of songs since I finished mastering months ago, but I just keep coming back to superlatives for the brilliant individual musicians who contributed. I wasn’t expecting a narrative arc, and I certainly wasn’t prepared for how to present all the extra versions and treatments they delivered, but we are pattern-seeking creatures, and these tracks definitely group to tell a story. The unabridged version is collected on Bandcamp as “Folio i & ii”, but the complete account is revealed as a continuous mix on the streaming release “Folio i”, a result of how perfectly the mixes complement each other. It’s a lot to ask anyone to listen to an hour of the same song, but… I’m telling you: this works!

I feel abundantly fortunate to have received this kind of patience, enthusiasm, and collaborative temperament from Addam, Cellmod, Drekka, CRT, and Eric. Thank you.

My contribution to Dead Drops & Chalk Marks, “’86 Spies Version,” takes vintage synthpop straight off the cassette that was stuck in your high school goth carpool driver’s radio. (You still listen when you’re driving to parties.) I’m glad it didn’t end up being the only one with a direct melodic quotation from an 80s pop hit. Ask me. “Cellmod Remix” is a charged synth banger for the darkwave dance floor or perhaps the occasional isolation tank headphone trip. (The DJ spins it when you walk in.) Check out the moody reharmonization in the choruses. It’s always amazing to hear Cellmod’s darker sensibilities take over, and in this case, we reworked the vocal melody to fit. “DJ Addambombb Remix” takes an exuberant turn on the other dance floor. I’m not going to just announce which song I hear referenced in the new parts, but let me know if you pick it up. This one was another gratifying collaboration on how the new chords and old melody work best together. (…some macabre party favors, still in streaked black eyeliner, but now with sparkles). I can’t justify trying to explain anything technical about “Fensgate Dining Hell Dub by CRT” since it was “just” one of the extra tracks CRT thew in, and seems to exist outside the realm of remix, well into being a new composition. (This marks where things went awry—a corporeal transcript of the mind rejecting aberrant memories of good times gone bad, kindest gestures misconstrued… you black out!) Another lore-item I’m withholding is which elements of The Drekka Variations earned an angry message from our distributor. I’ll just say working that out was part of the pleasure in the process. “Drekka XTRAMallsoft” (awakens you to the indistinct lavender haze of a VHS tape playing in a kiosk in the most forgotten corner of a dead mall—how did we even get here?)
