Metal newly clicked to my ears since the start of the pandemic. Of course older classics were always OK with me like:
Hard rock greats and Black Sabbath, the NWOBHM bands like Maiden or Priest, some thrash like early Metallica, and a few select death metal bands, Pungent Stench was a standout for their humor and catchy punked up Sabbath sound. Also some goth metal of the 90's like earlier Theater of Tragedy, and black metal on rare occasions. Obviously though, industrial metal above the rest when it was most fresh.
However a lot of great stuff passed me by. I've been digging and love it now. Nothing sounds as good on a speaker when I do long bike rides.
Carcass has THE sound. Melodic death metal is very good and there's so much more in other subgenres.
So, I found a local band with 1 album that is special.
Nite:
https://nitemetal.bandcamp.com/album/darkness-silence-mirror-flameIt has a classic sound with hybrid hissing blackened vocal style. They're local to me from San Francisco, I saw they were doing a show so I checked the other bands too.
Molten was headlining the show with their album release:
https://molten666.bandcamp.com/album/dystopian-syndromeI like them a lot too. The album has a lot of variety, some death/thrash tracks, some more metalcore (not a style I usually like but in this case yes), and a surprising classical track. Good job! The pandemic theme is so enjoyable.
There were 2 other bands at the show I did not like from their studio stuff for sounding generic to me. I want more depth than just noise and attitude... but I got surprised at the show. It was at a small local club. There was a modest mosh pit and a healthy sized crowd. It got me jumping.
- 1st band meh so I'll move on.
- Nite: band I came to see did not disappoint.
- Deathgrave: surprised me by being super entertaining, the front guy screamed high and low while miming zombie moves or ending it all with his mike cord. It was funny with hair whipping around. Made me wish I had some to whip around too.
- Molten: best of show, also with the hair windmills and obvious care to practice and shred out.
I was happy and will go to more shows like this.
