Athan Maroulis' - NØIR from NYC, New York - Spahn Ranch (Matt Green) - LA, CA.

Athan returned to his native New York City where he took a near decade-long break from music before joining Black Tape for a Blue Girl for a pair of albums and performances from Austin to Bucharest.
Afterwards, NOIR was formed as a project that would combine both Athan's Industrial and Gothic past while remaining very much in the electronic present. NOIR debuted with the "My Dear" single in late 2012, followed by the 2013 critically acclaimed album "Darkly Near," which Side Line Magazine said, "NOIR probably stands for the most intimate electro project Athan Maroulis has ever been involved with. It all sounds like revealing his deepest inner thoughts transposed into electronic grace and musical poetry."

Adding members Demetra Songs and Kai Irina Hahn, both on backing vocals and keyboards, NOIR began performing live in New York City followed by a series of road dates in the U.S. In 2014, NOIR completed a video for the song "My Dear," that was followed up by a video for "Timephase," along with the release of RE:MIT:TENT, featuring remixes by Assemblage 23, Dead Voices On Air, Ludovico Technique and many others.

Sounds and Shadows Interview with Athan Maroulis








Spahn Ranch was formed in Los Angeles by Matt Green who had moved from his native New York the previous year. Using the finances he had saved. Matt invited New York Rob Morton (his intermittent musical partner of the preceding five years) to Los Angeles to begin recording. The result was a four song ep that was recorded in June. Vocals were supplied by Scott Franklin, a friend of Matt's who was actually involved in another band at the time, but agreed to sing on the ep.

The self-titled release was recorded and mixed by Rod O'Brian at the Backroom in Glendale, CA in September of that year. A talented engineer, Rod's huge body of work included Bowie, Eno, and The Talking Heads. The newly formed Los Angeles-bassed label Cleopatra Records, agreed to realese the self-titled ep. In October, Matt and Rob contributed a new track, "Machine Politics" to the Cleopatra compilation "The Whip".

Shortly after the realease, Cleopatra Records informed Matt and Rob that their ep had been well received by the press and fans alike. Cleopatra also recommended that they find a full-time vocalist and consider recording an album. Coincidentally, Athan Maroulis, (a friend of the duo) had moved to L.A. at this time. Athan (a vocalist the duo admired) was asked to join the group. In April/May of that year, their debut album "Collateral Damage", was recorded. Judson Leach engineered the recording in his JLAB Studio in West Hollywood. Rob produced the music, while the vocals were overseen by Matt.

NOIR - Fallen (Paradox Obscur Remix)






Formed in New York City, NØIR debuted with the critically acclaimed "Darkly Near" in 2013 on Metropolis. Featuring vocalist Athan Maroulis along with the talents of guitarist/producer Erik Gustafson and the live keyboards of Jamie Parganos and Kai Irina Hahn. In 2019, NØIR cut their sixth title of sophisticated dark pop titled "A Pleasure." Soon after, in late 2019, in a studio in Austin, TX, NØIR began working on what would become their latest "Fallen," when Covid turned the world upside down and delayed the release. As Covid lifted, the death of Metropolis mastermind Dave Heckman further impeded progress of the EP. Eventually and laboriously, the catchy dance pulsing single "Fallen" was completed then remixed by both Paradox Obscur and Silver Walks. In fact, Paradox Obscur even produced a surreal black and white video for their remix. There's also "Fallen (Femme Mix)," with vocals by Kai Irina Hahn that gives NØIR a sensual female perspective and the plodding new song "Death is Easy." Ironically, this EP took so long to complete that it started to merge with plans for other NØIR releases such as an all acoustic EP, readily heard on the cello laced version of Psychedelic Furs "Love My Way." 'Fallen" is dedicated to the late Dave Heckman.
