Black Nail Cabaret is a pop noir duo, from Hungary. Formed in 2008, the group consists of Emese Arvai-Illes (vocals) and Krisztian Arvai (keyboards). The band, which was formed in Budapest, but was later based in London for several years, originally started with Sophie Tarr (keyboards) who left the band in 2016 to pursue her own music project.

They described their style as visual synthpop or synth noir, with experimental tones in some of the songs.

Chrysanthemum (Deluxe Edition)
by Black Nail Cabaret

The beautiful chrysanthemum in its humble white form is also known as the cemetery flower as it is often used to adorn graves for its longevity. For BLACK NAIL CABARET, the chrysanthemum's blossom paves the way for our own deathbed portraits. We know that the grim reaper will come to us all and bring the end, which turns us into fear-filled jars. Our jar could be filled with so many other things but fear permeates all. The eponymous "Chrysanthemum" of the Hungarian pop noire duo's sixth album symbolises an uprising against that but also acceptance. Although BLACK NAIL CABARET remain true to their marked penchant for sexually explicit provocation, the primal, subconscious fear of death that triggers emotions, anxiety, and the fear of letting go is also a red thread running through the album that is metaphorically named "Chrysanthemum". The eroticism of the Hungarians has always avoided cheap clichés. Instead the duo artistically depicts their living BDSM reality, which is framed by high aesthetic standards. Musically, BLACK NAIL CABARET have brought their outstanding songwriting abilities closer to perfection. On "Chrysanthemum", the duo is seemingly effortless blending dark electronic sounds with pop noire elements. Their talent to write songs that can stand on their own and do not rely on electronic trickery has set BLACK NAIL CABARET apart from their peers. At the latest on their self-released full-length "Pseudopop" (2018), the Hungarians had successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies, and powerful electronics. BLACK NAIL CABARET continued to hit the international scene with their fifth album "Gods Verging on Sanity" in 2020. The duo's excellent reputation rapidly spread through word of mouth even though the global pandemic enforced severe limitations upon them. Now the stars have all aligned, and BLACK NAIL CABARET are ready to take on the world with a dark soundtrack of life's glory that is symbolised by a shiny white flower of seeming innocence that at closer inspection also carries all the eternal might of death in its scent: "Chrysanthemum".

Black Nail Cabaret & Friends - Woodland Memoirs
by Black Nail Cabaret

The new BLACK NAIL CABARET album "Woodland Memoirs" is deliberately designed as a very different beauty from all the Hungarian avant-garde synth pop duo's previous releases. The thrilling outcome of their musing upon the nature of electronic and analogue music that the Hungarians engaged in is a one-off experiment for which BLACK NAIL CABARET enlisted the help of close musician friends: guitarist Tamás Számvéber, saxophone player Márton Barják, a former member of Hungarian ska act CsizmáSKAndúr, and Péter Laskay on drums. Under the moniker BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS, the Hungarians release a stunning full-length that is in many ways a part of their musical cosmos but at the same time an exciting side-project branching off from their regular works into an unexplored dimension. BLACK NAIL CABARET hand-picked a total of eleven tracks from each of their previous releases. Those were transformed into BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS songs by adding guitars, drums, and saxophone in a semi-live recording process that left room for improvisation and went with the flow. In order to stress the organic character of their own 'cover versions', the band added beautiful footage recorded in the pine woods at the Agostyán Arboretum, Hungary. When BLACK NAIL CABARET emerged onto the international scene with their sophomore album "Gods Verging on Sanity" in 2020, the duo managed to rapidly spread their excellent reputation mainly through word of mouth despite the limitations enforced upon them by the global pandemic. At the time, BLACK NAIL CABARET had already left an impressive mark upon the electronic music scene of their native Hungary with the self-released debut full-length "Pseudopop" (2018) that successfully fused art, pop, dark harmonies and powerful electronics. From the start, BLACK NAIL CABARET are marked by a penchant for sexually explicit provocation. While the Hungarians avoid embarrassing cheap clichés, they artistically depict their living BDSM reality, which is framed by high aesthetic standards. With "Woodland Memoirs", BLACK NAIL CABARET AND FRIENDS share a singular musical experiment with the world that has beautifully gone even far better than expected by happily transgressing genre and style and opening their music to ears both in and beyond the world of electronic sound.
