Mickey Mouse Button in the Triangle Bush
I find myself laughing out loud as Joel McHale highlights the most ridiculous moments that happened during the week on television and in celebrity news. Usually, Joel shows clips and comments on reality shows, news, and other TV programs and rarely misses an opportunity to highlight just how stupid people look on TV. However, a clip from a recent episode I watched made me laugh a little harder and think a little deeper about the television we watch and who the targeted audience really is.
The clip that interested me most was a clip of a popular children’s show, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse. The clip is introduced as, “What The Kids Are Watching,” and proceeds to show Mickey, Goofy and Donald Duck on a quest to find a special, triangle shaped bush with a special button that when pushed, ignites fireworks! The “hidden” adult humor is pretty obvious and Joel McHale sums up the clip a lot better than I probably can. Watch.
In addition to making me laugh and rewind the clip three times, I was left think about the creators and artists of Disney, or any other children’s entertainment media, and wanting to applaud them. I think that it’s great that they can include something into a kid’s show, that parents consequently have to watch too, that will force a giggle out of an adult when normally they might be bored out of their mind. The introduction of this clip on the Soup insinuates that the children watching would be mortified and crying about what they saw, but I’m not sure that would really be the case. Most kids who are watching Mickey Mouse Clubhouse are probably at the age where a sexual reference like this would go unnoticed and way over their heads. I think that they would be mentally invigorated enough by learning to distinguish shapes and what not.
I know that Disney has been known for sneaking in a little adult humor and entertainment here and there, and I don’t see any harm in parents getting a laugh out of an otherwise “elementary” and monotonous show their kids are watching. Thankfully, for those of us who are not parents and babysitters, Joel McHale shares the naughty comedy that writers sometimes include in children’s cartoons on The Soup!
